CLEVELAND, Ga. – The White County Board of Commissioners during their regular meeting on Monday approved a resolution honoring Truett McConnell University’s 80th anniversary.
Commission Chairman Travis Turner read a proclamation that stated the Georgia Baptist Convention held a ceremony in Cleveland on July 23, 1946, to establish a new two-year liberal arts college named in honor of George W. Truett and Fernando C. McConnell. The college opened its doors and welcomed its first class of students in September, 1947.
Turner, reading from the proclamation, highlighted the university’s ties to White County. “And whereas throughout its history, Truett McConnell University has remained deeply connected to White County through education, workforce development, ministry, athletics, community service and civic involvement,” said Turner.
The college became a four-year university in 2016.
