ATLANTA — Former state Rep. Tanya Miller secured the Democratic nomination for Georgia attorney general on Tuesday, while state Sen. Brian Strickland won the Republican nomination, setting up a general election matchup for one of the state’s top legal offices.
Miller, a former state representative, celebrated her primary victory by thanking supporters and campaign volunteers, highlighting what she described as a broadening coalition behind her candidacy.
“None of this would be possible without my family, friends, and an incredible team who believed in this mission from the start,” Miller said in a statement Tuesday night.
“Together, we built a growing, diverse coalition of volunteers and neighbors who carried this campaign and I am grateful for every single one of them.”
Miller did not respond to requests for additional comment on election night by press time. Her campaign instead provided the statement she released Tuesday evening.
On the Republican side, Strickland, who chairs the Georgia Senate Judiciary Committee, emphasized a message centered on public safety, the rule of law, and consumer protection as he advanced out of a competitive GOP primary.
“I am proud of the race we ran and am honored by the support we received across the state,” Strickland said. “We now turn our attention to November where I look forward to earning the support of Georgians in the general election. My family is ready and we look forward to showing Georgians how hard we will fight for all of our families.”
Strickland spoke directly with Now Georgia following the election.
The general election matchup is expected to center on sharply different approaches to the attorney general’s office, with Democrats and Republicans offering competing visions on criminal justice priorities, consumer protection enforcement, and the role of the state’s top legal officer.
Both nominees now shift their focus to a statewide campaign that will conclude in November.
