The Russell County Commission is honoring legendary prosecutor Ken Davis. Commission members presented a resolution this past week recognizing Davis and officially naming the Russell County Judicial Center Grand Jury Room in his honor.
Davis began his career as an assistant in the district attorney’s office in 1978. He would go on to become the longest serving district attorney in the state of Alabama after more than four decades on the job. Rick Chancey took the helm of the DA’s office in December 2022, but Davis continues to work part time assisting with cases.
Davis told NowGeorgia.com “I grew up at 10th Avenue and 12th Street about 5 blocks from the courthouse. When I was 12, I had a morning paper route and delivered the newspaper to this courthouse in fact to Devon Kiker who would become the circuit clerk and a great friend many years later. My brothers and I on the weekends would surf down the grass on the west side on cardboard boxes we got from the A&P. I never imagined I would spend 50 years of my life as a Prosecutor in that building that was an imposing and mysterious place to a small boy. Being honored in this way by the County Commission is a much appreciated and humbling honor.”
The recognition came the same week condemned child killer Jeremy Williams was executed for the heinous murder of 5-year-old Kamarie Holland described by many in law enforcement as the worst case they’ve ever investigated in Russell County. Davis has prosecuted his share of some of the most diabolical killers in the country during his tenure at the district attorney’s office. He thoughtfully responded, “Every murder case is the most important case to the people who knew and loved the victim or victims of that case but of course there are cases because of the facts that draw more attention than others.”
Davis will officially step down from all duties at the Russell County District Attorney’s Office this December.
