Former Clarke County detention officer arrested after misconduct investigation

Former Clarke County Detention Officer Derwin Johnson (Clarke County Sheriff's Office)

ATHENS, Ga. — A former Clarke County detention officer has been arrested following an internal investigation into alleged professional misconduct, the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office said.

Former Detention Officer Derwin Johnson was arrested on a charge of violation of oath of office. The sheriff’s office said additional charges are pending under a Georgia law that prohibits providing unauthorized contraband to jail inmates.

The sheriff’s office did not specify what Johnson is accused of providing or attempting to provide to an inmate.

The arrest followed what the agency described as an “extensive” investigation by the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office of Professional Standards. The sheriff’s office did not say when Johnson’s alleged misconduct occurred or when his employment with the agency ended.

“The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office holds our team to the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct,” Sheriff John Q. Williams said.

“Our sworn duty is to uphold the law, maintain public trust, and ensure the integrity of this office. We will tolerate nothing less.”

Johnson will be transported to and housed at the Barrow County Jail, according to Williams.

The investigation is ongoing.
