CLEVELAND, Ga. — Grab a fishing pole, lace up your hiking shoes and head outside. The White County Parks and Recreation Department is encouraging families to explore the county’s lakes, rivers and parks this summer through a virtual fishing derby and a new outdoor passport challenge.

The Virtual Fishing Derby runs July 18-26, allowing anglers to fish from virtually anywhere, including lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. Participants have until 11:59 p.m. on July 26 to submit their catch.

To enter, anglers must submit a photo that clearly shows the fish on a measuring device. Each submission must include the fish species, weight and length. Entries may be submitted through the department’s online form or by emailing [email protected]. Only one fish may be entered per person.

Winners will be determined by the longest fish in each category and will be announced on July 28. The entry fee is $10.

Explore the parks, earn a prize

The department is also inviting families to discover White County’s parks through its new White County Parks Passport program.

Visitors can pick up a free passport at the Recreation Center at Yonah Preserve. Participants are encouraged to visit county parks, complete adventure challenges along the way, and return their completed passport to receive a prize.

The program is designed to get people outside and exploring everything White County’s park system has to offer during the summer months.
