CLAYTON, Ga. — Rabun County Schools and several local public safety agencies will conduct a school safety training exercise Thursday, July 16 at Rabun County Elementary School.

The all-day exercise is a collaborative effort involving Rabun County Schools, the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office, Rabun County Fire/EMS, the Rabun County Emergency Management Agency and other local and state public safety partners.

According to the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office, the training is designed to strengthen the coordinated response capabilities of first responders and school personnel in the event of a critical incident.

Rabun County Elementary School will be closed to public access throughout the exercise.

Residents may notice an increased presence of law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel and emergency vehicles responding to the school during the day. Officials emphasized that the activity is part of a planned training exercise and that there is no emergency.

The sheriff’s office said the exercises are an important part of ongoing efforts to improve school safety and prepare emergency responders and school staff to work together during a crisis.

Officials thanked the community for its understanding and support as agencies continue working to provide a safe learning environment for students and staff.
