Habersham student-athlete hospitalized after I-85 crash

ATLANTA, Ga. – A Habersham Central High School student-athlete was taken to a hospital Saturday morning after a bus carrying members of the school’s cross-country team was rear-ended on Interstate 85 in DeKalb County while returning from an overnight competition.

According to parents, the student was transported with a possible head injury, according to information obtained by Now Georgia. The extent of the student’s injuries and current condition were not immediately available.

Members of the Habersham Central cross country team competed in Fayette County Friday and stayed overnight before beginning the trip back to Habersham County Saturday morning.

During the return trip, the school bus carrying the students was traveling on I-85 outside Atlanta when a Nissan sedan struck it from behind.

Parents who contacted Now Georgia after the crash said students were left waiting along the interstate while investigators worked and transportation arrangements were made.

Additional information about the crash, including its exact location on I-85, the agency investigating the collision, the number of students traveling in the vehicle, and whether anyone else was injured, was not immediately available.

The identity of the injured student has not been released.

This marks the second time in less than a week that a Habersham County school bus has been involved in an accident.

On Sept. 3, one student sustained a minor injury according to the Georgia State Patrol after a pickup truck failed to yield and struck a bus on GA 197 South at the GA 365 interchange in Mt. Airy.

Now Georgia has reached out to law enforcement and school officials for additional information.
