CLARKESVILLE — The Habersham County Board of Commissioners will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, May 18, at the Habersham County Courthouse Jury Assembly Room, where members will take up a conditional use request for a proposed self-storage and boat and RV facility and hear public comments on a planned go-kart dirt track on Ponderosa Road.

The meeting will open with recognitions, including an employee spotlight honoring Story Lawrence Jackson and Charlie Davis. Commissioners will also consider a proclamation designating May 17–23, 2026, as EMS Appreciation Week, recognizing emergency medical services personnel across the county.

A public hearing is scheduled for a conditional use application from William Gary, who is seeking approval to build and operate a self-storage and boat and RV storage facility on an eight-acre parcel on Cannon Bridge Road. The property is located in the county’s low intensity district.

Public comments are also expected on a proposed go-kart dirt track on Ponderosa Road. Mitchell Payne and Marie Payne are listed as speaking in support of the project, while Gavin Angulo is listed as raising concerns.

Under the consent agenda, commissioners will consider multiple routine items, including approval of April meeting minutes, a ratification of a Family Treatment Court supplemental grant, and an intergovernmental agreement with the Habersham County Board of Education allowing use of the former Fairview Elementary School for emergency services training.

Also on the consent agenda are items related to state and regional grants, including ratification of a Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) safety action plan application, authorization for employee insurance benefits renewal for fiscal year 2027, and approval of documents tied to the ACCG Safety Grant and Safety Discount Program.

Commissioners are also expected to consider awarding a contract for fencing at the new animal shelter site to A&T Fence and approving a change order with Communications International for the county’s P25-compliant radio system project.

Reports will include an update from County Manager Tim Sims and a presentation from Planning Director Mike Beecham with an update regarding the unified development ordinance.

Appointments on the agenda include vacancies and reappointments to the Department of Family and Children’s Services Board, Georgia Mountains Regional Commission, Habersham County Library Board, and Region 2 EMS Advisory Council.

Commissioners will consider ratification of a fiscal year 2026 scrap tire abatement reimbursement grant agreement.
