State investigators are looking into the early morning death of an inmate at the White County jail.

On August 24, at around 5:45 a.m., jail staff found 54-year-old Charles Anthony Mcleroy of Athens dead in his bed, says White County Sheriff Rick Kelley.

Kelley says the cause of death is “unknown at this time.”

Local authorities have not released any other information regarding Mcleroy’s death. The sheriff’s office turned over its investigation to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The GBI confirmed it is investigating Mcleroy’s death but did not provide any more information.
