The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an inmate death that occurred inside the Troup County jail according to the Troup County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff announced the death investigation in a Facebook post Saturday.

On April 11, at approximately 2:42 a.m., Troup County Sheriff’s Office Jail and Medical staff were alerted of a male inmate who was unresponsive in his dorm. Jail medical personnel were immediately notified who began life-saving measures including CPR and the use of an AED. Within a few minutes Troup County Fire Department and AMR arrived on scene and took over care.

The inmate, George Ellis, 70 years old, was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center where he later died. A cause of death is unknown until the completion of an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation who is also doing their own independent investigation.
