Former Cornelia Fire Chief Frankie Smith remembered for lifetime of service

CORNELIA, Ga. — The Northeast Georgia community is mourning the loss and celebrating the life of former Cornelia Fire Chief Frankie Smith. Smith, whose leadership helped shape the Cornelia Fire Department for more than four decades, died Monday, July 27. He was 75.

A Habersham County native, Smith dedicated nearly 50 years to protecting the citizens of Cornelia and surrounding communities. He joined the Cornelia Fire Department as a volunteer in 1968 at age 17, became a full-time firefighter in 1972 and was promoted to fire chief in April 1976.

Over the next 40 years, Smith led the department through decades of growth, helping build a stronger fire service to meet the needs of an expanding community. Beyond Cornelia, he earned a reputation throughout Habersham and Banks counties as a respected fire chief, mentor and teacher whose guidance influenced generations of firefighters.

The City of Cornelia recognized his extraordinary service by naming the city’s north fire station in his honor, a lasting tribute to his decades of leadership and dedication.

Former Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black called Smith “a true staple of the fire service, respected by so many, and his influence will continue to be felt for years to come.”

“Frankie leaves behind a lasting legacy and a strong impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him,” Black added.

Outside the fire service, Smith was known as a devoted family man and respected church leader. In his obituary, he is remembered as a man of deep faith and quiet service.

Smith is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth Smith, their son and daughter-in-law and two granddaughters.

Funeral arrangements

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 31, at Mountain View Baptist Church in Baldwin where Smith was a member and deacon. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 30, at McGahee-Griffin & McEntire Funeral Home in Cornelia and again Friday, July 31, from noon until 1:30 p.m. before the service.
