Candidates qualify for local office

It appears local businessman Joe Elam (pictured) will be the next mayor of Baldwin. Elam was the only candidate to qualify to run for the position in the Nov. 6 Special Election. Barring a successful bid by a write-in candidate, Elam will be elected.

Qualifying ended Friday at noon.

Two people qualified to run for the City of Clarksville Post 2 seat. Roxanne Barron and Melvin Cash are vying for the post.

In Alto, no one qualified to run for the Post 2 council seat. The town will hold a special election referendum on whether to allow beer and wine package sales.

The deadline to file a notice of intention to be a write-in candidate is Sept. 4.

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6, 2018 General & Special Elections is Oct. 9, 2018.
