Burn ban extends to Troup County

Burn ban extends to Troup County (Homerville Fire Department/Facebook)

A ban on all outdoor burning has been put in place by Troup County officials, effective immediately. Hazardous wildfire conditions exist across the State of Georgia, including Troup County and the surrounding area.

According to the Georgia Forestry Commission, approximately 98% of the state is facing moderate to exceptional drought conditions, with wildfire activity already exceeding the five-year average. Several devastating fires are currently burning across the state, prompting a state of emergency declaration for 91 Georgia Counties.

Low humidity and gusty winds continue to exacerbate persistent drought conditions. These factors have created hazardous circumstances and enhanced fire risks in Troup County. Additionally, Georgia Forestry Commission units that typically support Troup County Fire Department’s local efforts have been deployed to other regions of the state, further reducing resources available to combat wildfires locally.

These conditions have led the Troup County Fire Marshal, in cooperation and consultation with Troup County Management and the Troup County Director of Public Safety, to issue a complete ban on all outdoor burning, effective April 23, 2026 through May 1, 2026.
This burn ban applies to unincorporated Troup County and the City of Hogansville.

Per Troup County Code of Ordinances Chapter 62, Section 124: “The Fire Marshal shall have the authority to impose additional safety precautions or restrict burning, including the issuance of a complete burn ban, if it is determined that open burning imposes a threat to the public health, safety and general welfare.”

Violations of this article shall be punishable by and subject to the penalties as provided in Chapter 1, Section 1-19 of the Code of Troup County, Georgia.
