Body discovered in Elbert County home after fire

ELBERT COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities are investigating after a person was found dead following an early morning house fire Sunday in Elbert County.

Firefighters were dispatched to the fire on Hester Road shortly before 2 a.m. on March 15. After crews got the fire under control, they discovered one person dead inside the home, according to Elbert County Coroner Chuck Almond.

The person’s identity has not yet been confirmed.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Elbert County Fire Department, the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office, and the Elbert County Coroner’s Office.

Almond said the body will be taken to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Atlanta for an autopsy and positive identification.
