ATHENS, Ga. — Athens-Clarke County police have arrested an Athens man in connection with an investigation into a possible sexual assault reported near City Hall in downtown Athens.
49-year-old Timothy Evans was arrested Tuesday, Aug. 25, and charged with financial transaction card theft, financial transaction card fraud and identity fraud, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.
Police said the charges are connected to the sexual assault investigation. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
The investigation began Friday, Aug. 21, when officers responded to a local hospital after receiving a report of a possible sexual assault that may have occurred overnight in the area of Athens City Hall. Police initially said detectives had identified a person of interest but did not release that person’s identity or details about the circumstances surrounding the reported assault.
“We are currently investigating this as a sexual assault. There is no immediate threat to the public at this time,” ACCPD Lt. Katie Jenkins said following the initial report.
