Georgia Power customer information leaked through online portal

Georgia Power offers free credit monitoring after customer information leaked from online portal (Georgia Power Company)

A spokesman for Georgia Power confirmed a security breach occurred involving thousands of customers. Joshua Peacock said Georgia Power detected suspicious activity involving the company’s online customer portal.

An unauthorized third party accessed certain, limited information about the accounts of approximately 300,000 Georgia Power customers. Upon detection, we took immediate steps to stop the activity and have engaged law enforcement. We have conducted a thorough investigation, and we have not identified any evidence of ongoing unauthorized access.

Georgia Power sent out notifications to affected customers that stated in part through this activity, the unauthorized party gained access to limited contact information related to your account such as name, address, phone, email, last four digits of Social Security number, and other basic account details. The account information did not include bank account numbers, payment card numbers or driver’s license numbers.

The power company will provide customers with free credit monitoring as a result of the security breach.
