CLEVELAND, Ga. — White County collected nearly 1,500 used tires during Saturday’s Tire Amnesty Day, giving residents a way to dispose of old tires and helping keep them off roadsides.
Public Works Director Steve Worley reported the final figures Monday to the White County Board of Commissioners. A total of 262 people participated, dropping off 1,311 passenger tires, 75 truck tires, 29 off-road tires and 56 lawn mower and bicycle tires.
The collection totaled 1,471 tires.
The event at the White County Road Department on Truelove Road allowed local residents to bring up to six tires. Shortly after noon Saturday, Commissioner Lyn Holcomb said crews had already collected more than 800 tires and filled a 52-foot trailer.
Worley said state grant funding helps the county address a problem that otherwise costs local taxpayers.
“It helps keep them off the side of the road for us to pick up later, and then we have to pay for it. And we’re using grant money right now from the state. So it’s a good program; planning on next year doing it twice,” said Worley.
On Monday, Worley said crews were loading another trailer to get the remaining tires off the ground. He called the event a great success and said he looks forward to holding another collection in spring 2027 and a second next fall.
