ATHENS, Ga. — Downtown Athens is getting ready to let its monsters loose — and everyone is invited to join the parade.
Ghosts, ghouls, and creatures of every description will fill the streets on Oct. 31 as the Wild Rumpus Parade & Spectacle returns for its 18th year. With live music, circus performers, fire artists, and wildly imaginative costumes, the free Halloween celebration turns its audience into the main attraction.
The invitation is simple: Wear a costume, and you are the parade.
Organizers say this year’s Mardi Gras-style gathering will be the biggest yet. They describe it as a “party with a purpose,” with the 2026 event supporting The Cottage and the Athens Immigrant Rights Coalition.
Creativity and community are at the heart of the celebration, which brings together people of all ages and walks of life. Handmade costumes, puppets, floats, music and dance help transform downtown into a moving showcase of self-expression.
From the rally to the rumpus
The evening begins with the Rumpus Rally from 5–8 p.m. at Creature Comforts Brewing Co. The free, all-ages gathering gives participants a place to meet friends and show off their costumes before taking to the streets.
At 8 p.m., the parade begins down West Hancock Avenue, passing local bands along the route before moving into the festival area on West Washington Street between Lumpkin and Pulaski streets.
Through 11 p.m., bands will be playing on multiple stages, with fire spinners, aerialist performers, and laser lights adding to the spectacle.
The parade and street celebration are free and open to all ages. Those 21 and older may enjoy beer or wine within the designated open container festival zone. A wristband is required and will be sold at bars adjacent to the zone.
Two ways to keep the night going
When the street festivities wrap up, the celebration continues at two official after-parties from 11 p.m.–2 a.m.
Paloma Park will host “The Midnight Howl,” featuring Athens indie rock. Union Fare will offer the new Post-Rumpus Rave.
Both after-parties are free and open to adults 21 and older.
Help every kid get a costume
Before Halloween arrives, residents can help make sure more local children have a costume of their own.
The Every Kid Gets a Costume drive has extended its donation deadline through Friday, Oct. 16. Organizers are accepting new or gently used children’s and adult costumes.
Two new collection sites — The Detour in Winterville’s historic old bank building and Athens Kids Collective — have joined the drop-off list.
Donations may be left at:
- The Detour: 100 N. Church St., Winterville.
- Athens Kids Collective: 1684 Barnett Shoals Road, Athens.
- Fox Den Third Space: 160 Tracy St., #9, Athens.
- ACC Waste Management Admin Office: 725 Hancock Industrial Way, Athens.
- Double Helix STEAM School: 125 Old Monroe Road, Bogart.
- ACC Landfill: 5700 Lexington Road, Winterville.
- CHaRM (Center for Hard to Recycle Materials): 1005 College Ave., Athens.
