ATHENS, Ga. — A 21-year-old University of Georgia senior remains hospitalized after surviving an eight-story fall from an Athens apartment building over the weekend.

Kristin Sargent fell from an eighth-floor window at Rambler Athens on Saturday, Sept. 26. Athens-Clarke County police determined the incident was accidental and said no charges are expected.

According to police, Sargent was dancing and singing on a couch near an open window before she fell through it and landed near the apartment complex’s second-floor pool deck. A police report indicates she struck a metal bench during the fall.

Officers found Sargent alert and conscious near the pool. She was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Her father, Richard Sargent, told WSB-TV that his daughter suffered several broken bones and remains in intensive care.

Rambler Athens sent an email to residents Sunday reminding them not to tamper with safety limiters installed on windows throughout the property. The devices are designed to restrict how far the windows can open.

“Our thoughts are with our resident, and we are wishing for a speedy recovery,” a Rambler Athens representative told WUGA News on Tuesday. “We are continuing to gather information and review the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
