Mother of slain police officer responds to online controversy

The mother of slain Warm Springs police officer Sgt Chris Fisher responded to online controversy about the motive behind her son’s murder. Sgt Fisher was assassinated while he sat in his patrol car outside the Meriwether Country Inn late Tuesday night September 1, 2026. The alleged killer Jimmy Lee Steverson was out on bond after being arrested just days earlier by Sgt Fisher for possession of marijuana, firearm offenses and obstruction of an officer. Law enforcement officials said Sgt Fisher was “targeted” by the 23-year-old Steverson.

In a stunning display of indifference for the police officer’s death users across multiple social media platforms claimed to know the motive behind Steverson’s heinous act. Commentators said they were privy to information about Steverson’s August 27th arrest by Sgt Fisher. The arrest was described as a violent encounter.

“They know Fisher had tased jimmy in his head when he arrested him and beat him up, but they don’t wanna speak on that,” wrote one person. Other supporters of Steverson, who killed himself in South Carolina after an intense manhunt made unconfirmed claims that a large sum of money had also been confiscated from Steverson during that arrest in an attempt to justify the murder. Some posters celebrated the officer’s demise.

Vicki Lynn Haywood read the comments. “This young man that was ambushed was my son. He was a good man and an honorable Police Officer. He was also a believer in Jesus Christ so I know where he is. Which is more than I can say for the perp. I will turn off notifications after I post because God says don’t answer a fool his folly. you can’t make it make sense because they don’t know Jesus. and my son was not a racist, one of his best friends growing up was not white. He didn’t see color, just his friend.”

Arrest warrants obtained by FOX 5 in Atlanta reveal the August 27th arrest of Steverson was a violent encounter but shows Steverson as the aggressor striking Sgt Fisher’s face with a closed fist. NowGeorgia.com reached out to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for a copy of the body camera footage of the arrest if one exists. The GBI directed calls regarding the August 27 encounter to the Warm Springs Police Department which did not return a call for comment.

Tributes continue to pour in for Sergeant Fisher who served in the Army before working for several law enforcement agencies including seven years with the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office. “Fisher dedicated his life to serving others. He answered the call when it mattered most and ultimately made the greatest sacrifice a law enforcement officer can make. Rest easy, Sgt. Fisher. Your watch is over, but your service and sacrifice will live on forever,” the sheriff’s office wrote in part.

Other colleagues remember the 36-year-old father of two as a “soft spoken” dedicated officer with a good sense of humor.
