TOCCOA, Ga. — Safe drivers in Toccoa could receive an unexpected reward instead of a citation this month through a new community partnership between the Toccoa Police Department and Currahee Motors.
The “Christmas in July” campaign will have Toccoa police officers looking for motorists who demonstrate safe driving habits, including obeying traffic laws, wearing seat belts, properly securing children in safety restraints and avoiding distracted driving.
Instead of issuing a ticket, officers may stop selected drivers and present them with a $30 Walmart gift card provided by Currahee Motors.
Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said the initiative is intended to recognize motorists who help make the city’s roads safer while strengthening relationships between officers and the community.
“This is a great opportunity to recognize the many drivers in our community who consistently make safe and responsible choices behind the wheel,” Carlisle said. “Law enforcement isn’t always about enforcement. Sometimes it’s about recognizing positive behavior, building relationships, and showing our appreciation to the citizens who help make our community a safer place.”
The department said the campaign is designed to encourage safe driving while creating positive interactions between law enforcement and the public.
Police also thanked Currahee Motors for sponsoring the initiative, saying the dealership’s support makes it possible to reward drivers who set a positive example on Toccoa’s roadways.
Officials encourage motorists to buckle up, obey speed limits, eliminate distractions and practice safe driving throughout the month. Drivers following the rules may find their next traffic stop comes with a holiday surprise instead of a ticket.
