CLEVELAND, Ga. — Several fire units from Cleveland and White County were dispatched to a commercial fire call in downtown Cleveland on Thursday afternoon, but when the first unit arrived on scene, it was determined there was no fire.

A caller to 911 reported a smell that appeared to be smoke inside the United Bankshares building on North Main Street.

Cleveland Fire Chief Jason Bryant, who was on scene, described what firefighters found.

“Someone inside smelled something strange and thought they smelled smoke, so they asked us to come check it out. So that’s really just what we did — checked the inside, outside and roof, and made sure it was all clear so they’re good to go inside,” Bryant said.

During the inspection, employees and customers were evacuated from the building.

The call came into 911 at about 3:30 p.m.

Bryant said that after firefighters checked the building, employees and customers were allowed to return inside.
