Alto council to discuss Banks County SPLOST Tuesday

ALTO — The Alto Town Council is expected to discuss its participation in the proposed 2027 Banks County Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and a property matter during its regular meeting Tuesday night.

Council members will meet at 7 p.m. June 9 at Alto Town Hall, with a work session scheduled for 6 p.m.

One of the key items on the agenda is discussion of the proposed 2027 Banks County SPLOST. Alto is unique among northeast Georgia municipalities because the town spans both Habersham and Banks counties, allowing it to receive funding from SPLOST programs approved by voters in each county.

Banks County officials are currently developing a project list for the next six-year SPLOST referendum, which is expected to appear on the November ballot. Earlier this week, the Baldwin City Council discussed a proposal that would significantly shift its Banks County SPLOST priorities toward water system improvements.

Under the preliminary proposal presented to Baldwin, more than half of the city’s anticipated Banks County SPLOST revenue would be directed toward water infrastructure projects, including transmission line improvements and a new water storage tank. The proposal represented a departure from previous SPLOST programs that focused more heavily on road, park and facility improvements.

It was not immediately clear what projects Alto may seek to include in the Banks County SPLOST package.

Following new business, the council is expected to enter executive session to discuss personnel and real estate matters as allowed under Georgia’s Open Meetings Act.

The meeting is open to the public.
