CLEVEAND, Ga. – The City of Cleveland is preparing to move City Hall and its police department into a new facility, marking the end of an era for Cleveland’s longtime municipal headquarters.
In a statement, Cleveland Mayor Josh Turner shared details about the upcoming move and reflected on the history of the current City Hall, which has served the community since 1955. Over the decades, the building has housed “City Hall, the Police Department, the Fire Department, and every municipal office under one roof.”
Although the more than 70-year-old building has been expanded several times, city officials say it has deteriorated to the point that it can no longer adequately serve residents or employees.
Earlier this year, the Cleveland City Council approved the purchase and renovation of a new facility at 55 Cantrell Road.
According to the mayor, fiscal responsibility was a key factor in selecting the building. Turner wrote, “By the end of this calendar year, the City will own this facility free and clear, with no debt.”
The city chose to renovate an existing building rather than construct a new one, a decision officials say will save money while still providing “outstanding customer service while providing a modern, efficient, and accessible space for our residents.”
Turner also said the current Police Department building will be repurposed as a community center, returning it to its original use.
The land on which the current City Hall sits is leased from White County. Once the city vacates the property and terminates the lease, the site will be returned to the county.
The new City Hall and Police Department will open Monday, August 10. City officials said details about a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house will be announced soon.
