It’s the largest spring-fed pool in Georgia and a National Historic Landmark. As it has been for decades, beginning with the Memorial Day weekend and through the prime summer months for swimming, the Liberty Bell Pool is now open to the public.

The pool was constructed in the early 1940s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), a work relief program spearheaded by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It’s located at the park which bears his name, FDR State Park in Pine Mountain. To say the Liberty Bell is unique is an understatement.

The pool was carefully hand-built using local, natural Hollis quartzite stone and mortar. It was designed in a unique, curvy linear shape meant to resemble the Liberty Bell. The pool is continually filled by cold, natural mountain springs. King’s Gap Spring contributes about 175,000 gallons of fresh water per day to the 500,000-gallon pool. The crystal clear water is cooler than most, with water temperatures averaging between 50 and 60 degrees, providing a refreshing swim when air temperatures climb into the 90s.

The Liberty Bell is open from May 27 until August 2, Wednesday through Sunday, from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm. The schedule begins again from August 8 through September 6, Saturdays and Sundays only, with the same hours. General admission is $7.00, senior citizens $5.00, children under three years old $3.00, and admission with a Military ID is $6.00.

Mark your calendar for the Liberty Bell Pool Dog Splash on Saturday, September 5, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, that is when your pups take over. The day is for pup fun in the pool. Music, activities, and contests will round out the fun. No hoomans allowed in the pool that day. For more information on the event, call 706-663-4858.
