CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — A new traffic restriction is coming to a busy downtown intersection as officials work to improve safety and reduce confusion for drivers.

The Clarkesville Police Department announced that the intersection of Monroe and Washington streets — commonly referred to as the town square — has been designated “No Right Turn on Red” following a request to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

GDOT has installed signage at the intersection to reflect the change. However, police said there is currently a visibility issue with the sign that will be corrected.

Once the visibility issue is resolved, the department will begin a 30-day education period. During that time, officers will issue warnings only, giving motorists an opportunity to adjust to the new traffic pattern.

Police said the change is intended to address ongoing traffic concerns, improve clarity for drivers and enhance pedestrian safety in the downtown area.

Drivers with questions are encouraged to contact the Clarkesville Police Department during regular business hours.
