(GPB News) – Gov. Brian Kemp has signed a 60-day suspension of the state gas tax to counteract high fuel prices influenced by the war in Iran. That will save consumers about 33 cents per gallon on gasoline and 37 cents on diesel.

Kemp says the suspension is needed economic aid for people in the state.

“Today is just the latest step we’re taking, and it’s one that will help all Georgians as they work to make ends meet,” Kemp said.

The suspension goes into effect immediately.

Georgia Speaker of the House Jon Burns (R-Newington) said that while expectations are that the war will end soon, Georgians need the gas tax suspension now.

“The House knew that we couldn’t wait to ease the burden on countless Georgia families, citizens and businesses across this state,” Burns said.

Kemp also signed a state income tax rebate giving $250 back to single filers and $500 to those filing jointly.
