GAINESVILLE — Motorists traveling along Interstate 85 in Franklin County should expect delays this weekend as the Georgia Department of Transportation conducts maintenance on a key truck monitoring system.
GDOT crews will perform scheduled work on the weigh-in-motion (WIM) system along the southbound lanes near mile marker 170 from Friday through Sunday, March 20-22. Work will take place daily between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., weather permitting, according to GDOT Communications Officer Nathan Johnston.
The maintenance will involve removing and repairing WIM scales, which are used to measure the weight of commercial vehicles as they travel at highway speeds. The system plays a critical role in protecting roadways from damage caused by overweight trucks.
Drivers can expect a right lane closure between mile markers 170.00 and 170.50, along with a lane shift to guide traffic through the work zone. The right shoulder will also be closed during active work hours.
GDOT officials urge motorists to slow down, use caution, and allow extra travel time when traveling through the area. Message boards and traffic control devices will be in place to assist drivers.
The agency said maintaining the WIM system helps ensure accurate monitoring of truck weights, improving roadway safety and extending the lifespan of Georgia’s transportation infrastructure.
