CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Two Habersham County School District employees were recognized Monday night for their service to students and colleagues with honors sponsored by Peach State Federal Credit Union.

The district presented the Extra Mile Award to Tiffany Collins, an eighth grade social studies teacher at North Habersham Middle School, and the Service Above Self Award to Jackie Cane, a nutrition assistant at Woodville Elementary School.

Board Chair Joey Duncan presented the Extra Mile Award to Collins, reading from her nomination submitted by colleagues.

North Habersham Middle School staff praised Collins for consistently going “above and beyond the call of duty” for students, coworkers and the broader school community. Duncan said Collins brings history to life in her classroom, often using her own resources to enhance lessons and celebrate student achievement.

Her impact extends beyond academics, Duncan said, noting Collins volunteers during planning periods to attend individualized education program meetings, donates books to self-contained classrooms and regularly checks in on students to ensure they feel supported.

“She ensures all students feel seen, valued and included,” Duncan said.

Collins was also recognized for supporting fellow teachers, including taking on additional duties when a colleague was hospitalized and mentoring a first-year teacher by helping her prepare for certification exams and offering ongoing encouragement.

Duncan said Collins’ involvement in school activities, from Beta Club to student performances, and her commitment to a positive school culture reflect “school spirit, positivity and servant leadership.”

“She truly represents what it means to go the extra mile,” he said.

Board member Dr. Robert Barron presented the Service Above Self Award to Cane, highlighting her dedication to students at Woodville Elementary.

Barron said Cane has taken on an extraordinary workload this school year, at times serving as the only nutrition employee on campus while continuing to ensure students are fed and cared for.

“Miss Jackie has borne the weight of preparing our students’ meals,” Barron said.

Beyond meal preparation, Barron said Cane builds relationships with students by learning their names, engaging them in conversation and even assisting younger children with their trays.

“She doesn’t just serve food — she serves students,” he said.

Barron added that Cane often steps away from the serving line to interact with students in the cafeteria and throughout the school, consistently asking how she can help others.

Her service extends beyond Woodville, Barron said, noting her work with a Boys and Girls Club after-school program, where she continues to mentor and support students.

“She loves them like her own,” Barron said. “That’s how she serves. She cares.”

District leaders said both recipients exemplify the values of dedication, compassion and service recognized by the Peach State Federal Credit Union awards.
