Truett McConnell University student’s death under investigation

CLEVELAND, Ga. — Cleveland police and the White County Coroner’s Office are investigating the death of a Truett McConnell University student.

Cleveland Police Chief Jeff Shoemaker said officers responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive person at a residence on the university campus at approximately 5:18 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20. Officers found a deceased male inside a campus apartment.

The White County Coroner’s Office transported the student’s body to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Laboratory for examination, Shoemaker said. Foul play is not suspected.

The case remains under investigation.

The university issued a statement Monday afternoon acknowledging the student’s death.

“With heavy hearts, we confirm the death of a TMU student yesterday (Sunday) on campus. Our community is heartbroken, and our prayers are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and all who are grieving.”

University officials said they are supporting the student’s family and will continue to respect their privacy.

“Because this is an active investigation, we ask that everyone refrain from speculation and from sharing unverified information, out of respect for the family and those who are grieving,” the statement read.

The university is providing counseling, pastoral care and other support to students, faculty and staff affected by the loss.
