TOCCOA, Ga. — The Toccoa Police Department officially opened its new headquarters this week, marking a major upgrade from its longtime home in the basement of City Hall.

City leaders, officers and community members gathered for a grand opening ceremony at the new facility, which provides expanded space, improved privacy and a more functional layout for day-to-day operations.

Police Chief Bruce Carlisle said the transformation from the building’s original condition to its finished form reflects a collaborative effort between city leaders and the community.

“When we all first walked in here, we were like, ‘I don’t know about all that,’” Carlisle said. “But this is such a great facility that will serve the city for years to come.”

Carlisle thanked the mayor and city commissioners for their support, as well as Vice Mayor Michelle Jamieson, who served as a liaison during the project. He also credited City Manager Gayle Fry with helping spark the idea to relocate the department.

The move also comes at a critical time for the city. Carlisle noted that a recent fire at the city’s water plant destroyed office space there, allowing water department staff to relocate into City Hall after the police department vacated.

More space, better service

For Carlisle, the most immediate benefit of the new building is space — something the department had long outgrown.

“At City Hall, we were completely out of room,” he said. “We had four investigators in one office, so it was very difficult to maintain any kind of confidentiality.”

The new facility allows officers and investigators to spread out, conduct interviews privately and better serve the public. It also houses municipal court operations, further centralizing city services.

Carlisle said the layout and accessibility of the one-story building will improve efficiency and create a more welcoming environment for residents.

“This is just a much better setup for us and for the public,” he said.

Community support

Carlisle also emphasized the role local businesses and community members played in making the project possible.

“The community that reached out — and that we reached out to — helped provide resources we wouldn’t have been able to afford otherwise,” he said. “We’re just so grateful for that.”

Vice Mayor Jamieson echoed that sentiment during the ceremony, praising both Carlisle and the department for their persistence in bringing the project to life.

“It could not have happened without Chief Carlisle pushing and pushing to make this a reality,” she said. “The transformation from the first time we walked through this building to now is remarkable.”

Looking ahead

Carlisle said the new headquarters positions the department to grow alongside the city while improving service delivery.

“This building will provide police services for many years to come,” he said. “We now have all of our operations under one roof, with space for the public and a layout that just works better.”

He also used the occasion to reflect on the department’s mission moving forward.

“We want to make this the safest place we possibly can for our citizens,” Carlisle said. “And we want to do it the right way.”

During the ceremony, Carlisle said the department would dedicate the building to faith and service, asking for guidance in the work carried out inside its walls.
