Toccoa man arrested after high-speed chase ends with K-9 capture in Habersham

TOCCOA, Ga. — A Toccoa man faces multiple charges after authorities say he fled the scene of a domestic dispute and led deputies on a high-speed chase before being tracked down by a K-9 in Habersham County.

The incident began around 4:55 p.m. July 25 when Stephens County deputies responded to a reported domestic dispute at a home on North Currahee Lane. Dispatchers told deputies the alleged aggressor, 37-year-old Jeffrey Scott Perry, was attempting to leave the scene.

When deputies arrived, Perry drove away in a silver Chrysler Sebring, prompting a pursuit toward the Stephens-Habersham County line. During the chase, Perry ran multiple stop signs and traffic signals, repeatedly crossed the centerline and nearly caused several crashes, according to Stephens County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Rebekah Smith.

The pursuit continued along Carnes Creek, Mize and Black Mountain roads before deputies ended it near the county line due to concerns for public safety, Smith said.

Investigators later determined Perry had allegedly entered the North Currahee Lane home without permission and became physically aggressive when he was asked to leave.

Deputies issued a lookout for Perry and his vehicle. About two hours later, Habersham County deputies found the Sebring at a home in Clarkesville.

“According to witnesses, Perry pulled into the backyard of a residence and stated he ran out of gas after running from the law in Toccoa. Perry then walked into the woods behind the residence,” said Smith.

A Habersham County K-9 quickly tracked down Perry, and deputies arrested him without incident.

Perry is also a person of interest in a suspicious person investigation from earlier that morning in Toccoa. According to Smith, 911 callers reported a man matching Perry’s description loitering around a property on Richardson Street before leaving with another driver in a silver Chrysler Sebring—the same vehicle involved in Saturday’s pursuit. No charges have been filed in that investigation.

Perry remains in the Stephens County Detention Center on a $14,000 bond. He is charged with fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, two counts of simple battery, reckless driving and multiple traffic offenses.
