The Department of Homeland Security subpoenas 13 voter files in Georgia

(GPB News) — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has issued a subpoena to the Georgia Secretary of State office for a handful of voter files.

State officials say they received a subpoena for 13 voters’ files as part of a DHS investigation.

Gabe Sterling, secretary of state director of special projects, said Georgia has over 8 million registered voters, so the scale of the request is relatively small. He said the office is complying with the subpoena.

“It’s an immigration investigation by them,” Sterling said. “So this could be for people they think might have potentially voted or for people who are applying for citizenship, because if they have voted, then they don’t get it. We know other states have had similar requests for information subpoenas done and that was the outcome from those.”

An independent review found Georgia’s voter rolls to be more than 99.9% accurate, according to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

Non-citizen voting is rare and illegal, but it has been a point of focus for the Trump administration since President Donald Trump lost Georgia in the 2020 election. Last month, a U.S. Census report claimed that 400 noncitizens voted in Georgia in 2020 — a claim that Raffensperger’s office has questioned. Multiple audits have found the results of the 2020 election to be accurate.
