MCCAYSVILLE, Ga. — The man accused of shooting McCaysville Police Captain Brantley Worley is now in custody. Authorities confirmed that 26-year-old Timothy Craig Ramsey was arrested around 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 13, following a daylong manhunt involving local, state, and federal agencies.

Captain Worley remains in critical condition after being shot in the face late Friday night while responding to a call about a suspicious person. The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. on September 12 and triggered a GBI Blue Alert for Ramsey, who was considered armed and dangerous.

The GBI said Ramsey fled the scene of the shooting on foot, wearing a bright green chemical-resistant suit and a dark motorcycle helmet. He was located nearly 20 hours later in a wooded area near Bethel Church, approximately three miles west of town.

“We got a tip. That tip led us to find Mr. Timothy Ramsey,” said McCaysville Police Chief Michael Early.

The GBI, which is assisting in the investigation, expressed gratitude to the many agencies that assisted in the search and to the public for their cooperation.

A life of service

At last report, Worley was in critical condition at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, suffering a broken neck and a brain bleed from the shooting.

“He needs our prayers,” said Chief Earley.

Worley was promoted to police captain in July, but his service extends beyond the badge. He is a part-time firefighter/EMT and ordained minister. He is also a husband and father, known for his dedication to his community.

In a social media post, Pickens County Fire and Rescue, where Worley works part-time, said, “Brantley is a brother everyone enjoys being around. He is no doubt a ‘community servant to the bone!'”

Governor Brian Kemp asked Georgians to pray for the wounded officer.

“Marty, the girls, and I are asking all Georgians to join us in praying for this officer who was shot in the line of duty, as well as all law enforcement who face this kind of danger on a regular basis to protect their communities.”

Investigation continues

Authorities booked Ramsey at the Fannin County Jail. Although he is in custody, investigators are continuing their work.
