A strong geomagnetic storm brought spectacular light displays to many parts of the United States on Thursday night.
The northern lights, or aurora borealis, painted the skies, including in Northeast Georgia.
People from Maine to Macon shared their images with Now Habersham as the auroras splashed vivid colors across the northern sky.
The displays happen when charged particles collide with gases in the earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles.
The coloration in the sky was faint and dim when viewed by the naked eye, but cell phone cameras and DSLRs on long exposures brought out the best of them. Please share your photos of the northern lights and your location with us on Facebook. We’d love to see how they looked where you are.
Here’s a sampling of the hundreds of images we have shared so far.
