HABERSHAM COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities are searching for a man accused of assault inside a Habersham County home Thursday morning, prompting a multi-agency manhunt in the Mud Creek community.
According to the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an assault at a residence in the 3800 block of Mud Creek Road around 7:45 a.m. Thursday, March 12.
Investigators say the suspect, described as a white male with a beard, fled the home on foot. He may be wearing a white scarf or bandana covering part of his face.
Units from the sheriff’s office Uniform Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division and K-9 Unit are actively searching the area. Other law enforcement agencies are also assisting in the effort.
Now Georgia has confirmed that both South Habersham Middle School and Level Grove Elementary School are on soft lockdown as a precaution as the search continues.
“Level Grove and South Habersham were made aware of the manhunt taking place in the Mud Creek area as soon as it began, and administrators at those schools, in coordination with their SROs, implemented any needed procedures,” said Habersham County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Rob Moore.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s name or additional details about the alleged assault.
Deputies are urging residents in the Mud Creek area to remain vigilant while the search continues. Officials advise people to keep doors to their homes, vehicles and outbuildings locked and to report any suspicious activity to 911.
This is a developing story. Now Georgia will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
