Mac Koon named Habersham County public works director

CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — Habersham County has named Mac Koon its new public works director.

Koon joined the county as assistant public works director in December 2024 and most recently served as interim director. He brings more than 18 years of public service experience to the position.

“Mac has demonstrated strong leadership, dedication, and a commitment to serving Habersham County since joining our team,” County Manager Tim Sims said. “His experience in the military, the Department of Defense, and here within our Public Works Department has given him a valuable understanding of operations, resource management, and the importance of providing dependable services to our citizens.”

Koon began his military career in 2008. He continues to serve in the Air Force Reserve as a senior master sergeant and vehicle management superintendent.

He also worked for several years with the Department of Defense as a contracting officer’s representative and transportation specialist. Those positions gave him experience in contract management, transportation operations, government procurement, and resource management.

Since joining Habersham County, Koon has helped improve road and fleet operations, employee training and safety, purchasing, fleet planning, grant research and emergency response, said Sims.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue serving Habersham County in this role,” Koon said. “I truly enjoy working with our employees and serving the citizens of this county. I strive to approach my work according to Colossians 3:23—to work wholeheartedly and give my best in everything I do.”

Koon said his priorities include improving efficiency, building on the department’s existing work, and delivering quality services while responsibly managing county resources.

“My goal is to build on the work we’ve already started, improve the way we operate, and make sure we’re providing the best service we can with the resources we have,” he said. “I’m proud to be part of Habersham County, and I’m excited about what we can accomplish together.”

As director, Koon will oversee the maintenance of more than 500 miles of county roads and nearly 500 vehicles and pieces of equipment. He will also oversee operations at Habersham County Airport.

Koon holds a bachelor’s degree in government contracting and acquisition from American Military University.
