Lumpkin sheriff warns of phone spoofing scam

DAHLONEGA, Ga. — The Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers are spoofing the agency’s phone number and posing as deputies.

According to a notice posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page, the caller claims to be “Lieutenant Cole” or another member of the agency and tells victims they missed a federal subpoena. The caller then demands that the person turn themselves in within 72 hours or pay a fine immediately.

Officials say the calls are fraudulent.

“Our office will never call you and demand money,” the sheriff’s office said. “We will never ask for payment over the phone for a missed subpoena. We will not request gift cards, wire transfers, or any other immediate form of payment.”

Authorities advise anyone who receives such a call not to provide personal or financial information and to hang up immediately. Residents should contact the sheriff’s office directly using the official phone number listed on its website to verify any claims.

The sheriff’s office is asking the public to share the information to help protect others in the community.
