
Lewis Wayne Watkins, age 79, of Clarkesville, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 12, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on October 26, 1946, Wayne was the son of the late Barnie Lewis Watkins and Willie Pearl Freeman Watkins. A proud patriot, he faithfully served his country for 21 years in the Army National Guard, demonstrating unwavering dedication, honor, and commitment throughout his years of service.
Wayne found his greatest joy in the beauty of God’s creation. Whether he was hunting in the woods, trout fishing along a quiet stream, panning for gold, or searching for hidden treasures with his metal detector, he embraced every opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. He was happiest when surrounded by nature and sharing those passions with the people he loved. Wayne will be remembered for his gentle spirit, kind heart, quiet strength, and the countless memories he created with family and friends.
Above all, Wayne was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He shared 56 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Elora Newsome Watkins. Their enduring love and commitment served as an inspiration to all who knew them.
Wayne is also survived by his son, Heath Watkins and wife, Christy; daughter, Natasha Watkins; grandchildren, Caleb Tyre and wife, Kayla, Jonah Wayne Tyre and wife, Amber, and Noah Wikle; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Kaden, Charlotte, Raelyn, Bella, Eli, Westynn, and Beckett Arzo Tyre. He also leaves behind numerous extended family members, dear friends, and neighbors who will forever treasure the time they shared with him.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at Broad River Baptist Church with Dr. Kenneth Franklin, Mr. Dwayne Smith, and Mr. Jeff Caudell (Graveside) officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour on Tuesday.
