Lee County voters who want to cast their ballot in the hotly contested race for sheriff must select a republican ballot today. The race for Lee County Sheriff is partisan and both candidates are republican. There is no democratic challenger on the ballot so the election for sheriff will be determined in today’s primary.
Sheriff Jay Jones has held the office for nearly three decades. His challenger, Cam Hunt is a Marine veteran who launched a bitter campaign to unseat Jones. Hunt was fired from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office by Sheriff Jones after declaring his intention to run for the office last fall. Accusations about a lack of transparency and poorly maintained jail among other things have surfaced during the election cycle forcing the longtime incumbent to go on the defensive.
Both candidates have been active on social media making their final appeal to voters. “The decisions we make in this election will impact the next generation of Lee County. One candidate already has his finish line in sight. I’m just getting started.” wrote Cam Hunt.
Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones shared “When I first began serving in law enforcement, Lee County’s population was around 75,000 people. Today, that number is estimated to be over 180,000, and I know our community will continue to grow in the years ahead. That is why I have worked to ensure the Lee County Sheriff’s Office continues growing, adapting, and evolving alongside the community we serve.”
