LaGrange 12-year-old charged with involuntary manslaughter

On March 25, 2026, at approximately 8:45PM, Officers with the LaGrange Police Department responded to 64 North Cary Street in reference to a person who had been shot. Officers arrived on scene and located Nyquarious Gates who had sustained a gunshot wound to his body. Gates was transported to WellStar West Georgia Medical Center where he died as a result of his injury.

The Criminal Investigations Division was requested and responded to the scene to conduct their investigation into the shooting. The investigation revealed that a 12-year-old male juvenile was mishandling a loaded firearm when it discharged striking the victim. The juvenile was taken into custody and detained.

The 12-year-old is charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm under 18 according to a press release from the LaGrange Police Department.
