Mrs. Jane Porter Barden, age 93, of Cornelia, Georgia, took her heavenly flight home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
Born in Maysville, Georgia on December 18, 1932, she was a daughter of the late James Thomas “Jake” Porter and Dorothy Hogsed Porter. Jane devoted much of her life to serving others, leaving a lasting impression on countless lives throughout Habersham County. She faithfully served as secretary for South Habersham High School and South Habersham Junior High School from 1963 until her retirement in 1985, giving more than 22 years of dedicated service to the Habersham County School System.
Retirement simply marked the beginning of another chapter of service. Opening both her heart and her home, Jane lovingly cared for generations of children in the community. To so many, her home was simply known as “Miss Jane’s,” a place where children found encouragement, guidance, laughter, and unconditional love. Through her gentle spirit and nurturing heart, she helped mold young lives that would forever be better because they had known her.
Jane’s servant’s heart extended well beyond her home. She proudly served as a local Cub Scout Leader and was a Charter Member of the Ladies VFW Auxiliary. She was also a faithful member of Cornelia United Methodist Church, where she devoted many years to teaching Sunday School, sharing God’s Word and helping plant seeds of faith that would continue to grow for generations.
Above all else, Jane treasured her family. They were the greatest joy and blessing of her life. She found happiness in every gathering, every celebration, and every opportunity to simply be together. Just this past summer, she celebrated her 83rd year at the family’s beloved cabin on Lake Rabun—a place filled with cherished memories, laughter, and traditions that spanned generations. It was one of the places she held closest to her heart and symbolized the love and closeness that defined her life.
Jane’s legacy is one of unwavering faith, selfless service, quiet strength, and unconditional love. Whether as a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, trusted friend, faithful church member, or simply “Miss Jane” to the many children she cared for, she made the world around her brighter. Her influence will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched and the family she loved so deeply.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Billy Joe Barden; son, Mike Barden; sister and brother-in-law, Rosa Jean Porter White and Vernon White; and brother, David Porter.
Survivors include her loving daughter and son-in-law, Patsy and Robert Bell; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Tammy Barden; Janice Barden & husband, Peter Madruga; brother and sister-in-law, Tommy and Lassie Porter; sister-in-law, Judy Porter; grandchildren, Drew and Shar Barden, Brett and Bria Barden, Jenna and Isaiah Murphy, Patrick Bell, Peyton and Danielle Bell, Jackson and Riya Bell, T.J.
