DILLARD, Ga. — A longtime Fourth of July tradition in Rabun County will take a break this year as the City of Dillard and the Dillard House have canceled their annual Independence Day fireworks celebration because of ongoing Highway 441 construction.
City officials and the Dillard House announced the decision after determining that traffic conditions, parking restrictions and construction-related safety concerns would make it impossible to safely host the large crowds the event typically attracts.
“Due to ongoing construction, The Dillard House will not have a fireworks display this year. There will be no safe place for attendees to watch or park,” Dillard Mayor Claude Dillard told Now Georgia.

The cancellation comes as the Georgia Department of Transportation continues its Highway 441 improvement project through Dillard. According to city officials, GDOT has prohibited parking along the highway during construction, while available parking at the Dillard House is significantly reduced.
In a joint statement, the city and the Dillard House said the combination of traffic impacts and limited parking “would make it difficult to safely accommodate the large number of guests who traditionally attend the fireworks celebration and provide the quality experience our guests and community have come to expect.”
Officials acknowledged the disappointment the decision may cause, noting the fireworks show has become a cherished holiday tradition for families and visitors over the years.
“We recognize that this celebration has become a cherished tradition for many families and visitors, and this decision was not made lightly,” the statement said. “The City of Dillard and the Dillard House are committed to ensuring that community events can be enjoyed safely and without the challenges created by the current roadway construction.”
While the fireworks have been canceled, the Dillard House will remain open throughout the Independence Day weekend and will continue serving guests at its restaurant and lodging facilities.
Mayor Dillard said there is encouraging news regarding the highway project itself.
“The 441 project is 30% ahead of schedule. We have had a lot of water issues which are to be expected when doing this type of construction. We have been told that we are through the worst of it.”
The work is part of a massive $146 million state transportation project aimed at widening the highway into four lanes between Clayton North Carolina. Phase 1 began in September 2024 and has an expected completion date of October 2027. Phase 2 began in February 2025 and is expected to be completed in October of 2028.
City officials thanked residents and visitors for their patience and continued support as the work continues.
