The GBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting that injured a person in Lavonia. Police took two suspects into custody after a daylong manhunt following the incident, officials said.
Officers charged Justice Spencer and Koran Norman with aggravated assault. Police obtained arrest warrants for them late Thursday night.
“Within minutes of the warrants being issued, officers located both suspects within the city limits of Lavonia. After a brief foot pursuit, both individuals were taken into custody without further incident,” Lavonia PD said in a statement.
Investigation underway
The shooting occurred mid-afternoon on August 7, prompting a neighborhood lockdown. Authorities advised residents to stay indoors and keep their doors locked while officers from multiple state and local jurisdictions searched the area.
The Georgia State Patrol, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office assisted police on the scene. Lavonia Police said the shooting involved “an armed subject.” The department turned over the case to the GBI for an independent investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
According to police, the injured individual is in non-critical condition. In line with department policy, the two officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave while the internal and GBI investigations proceed.
“We ask for the community’s patience as the GBI conducts a thorough and independent review,” said the department in an official statement.
Investigators may file additional charges as the investigation develops.
