Former detention officer charged with sexual assault

A former Habersham County detention officer turned himself in Thursday afternoon following allegations of sexual misconduct involving an inmate.

Edwin Alexander Mendoza, 20, faces one count of sexual assault against a person in custody and one count of violation of oath of office, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Habersham County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Rob Moore said the agency received allegations of “possible inappropriate conduct” involving a jailer and an inmate. After receiving the complaint, the sheriff’s office requested the GBI take over the investigation.

Mendoza had been employed with the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office for approximately one year. Moore said he was hired on January 27, 2025, and was terminated on January 22, 2026.

The GBI is handling the ongoing investigation, and Moore stated that “all further information should be obtained” from that agency.
