CLARKESVILLE, Ga. — An early morning fire Thursday gutted Wolf Creek BBQ in Clarkesville, marking the restaurant’s second devastating fire in six years.
Clarkesville firefighters and crews from Habersham County responded around 4:45 a.m. Oct. 29 to the restaurant at 184 Clarkesville Station in the old Ingles shopping center.
Fire was coming from the roof at the rear of the building when crews arrived. Inside, firefighters found heavy fire and smoke damage but no visible flames, according to Clarkesville Fire Chief Jason Poole.
Crews quickly extinguished the roof fire, then searched the structure for hot spots and put them out.
Wolf Creek BBQ owner Mike Roberson told Now Georgia that a food vendor delivering supplies found water coming from the smoke-filled building and called 911. Roberson said the fire burned through water pipes, flooding the restaurant.
Smoke spread throughout the strip mall, including the adjacent China Take-Out restaurant. Firefighters opened all units and cleared the smoke. The State Fire Marshal’s Office was called to help determine the cause of the fire. Pool said it remains under investigation.
Second loss in six years
Roberson watched Thursday morning as firefighters worked to save what they could of his restaurant.
Six years ago, a fire destroyed Wolf Creek BBQ’s previous location in Cornelia. Investigators determined that blaze began in the smokehouse.
The Clarkesville restaurant will remain closed for the foreseeable future. Wolf Creek’s Cleveland location and its catering operation in Hollywood remain open.
