New information has been released in the rollover wreck that injured a Habersham County Sheriff’s School Resource Officer. Deputy Kyle O’Kelly was hurt when his patrol car hydroplaned in heavy rain and overturned multiple times on U.S. 441 in Banks County, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
The single-vehicle crash happened at 11:39 a.m. on July 24 as torrential rain and standing water created hazardous driving conditions across Northeast Georgia.
The 34-year-old Kelly, of Clarkesville, was driving a 2021 Dodge Charger north on U.S. 441 near McCoy Bridge when the vehicle hydroplaned in excessive standing water.
Troopers said O’Kelly was unable to regain control of the patrol car, which began to fishtail before leaving the roadway onto the east shoulder. The Charger then rolled multiple times before coming to rest on its passenger side, facing south, on the shoulder.
O’Kelly was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office said O’Kelly was returning from training at the Georgia Sheriffs’ Association in Madison when the crash occurred. Sheriff Robin Krockum thanked the Banks County Sheriff’s Office and first responders for their assistance at the scene.
The Georgia State Patrol said the crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed, and troopers said any decision on charges will be made once the investigation is complete.
