DAHLONEGA, Ga. — A Demorest student was among several University of North Georgia performers recognized during a special International Women’s Day concert earlier this month.
Bethany Bruning, a senior from Habersham County, performed on euphonium during the March 2 concert at UNG’s Gainesville Campus, which highlighted award-winning female students and faculty from the university’s Department of Music.
Bruning, the recipient of the 2026 Music Service Award, performed “She Danced in the Rain” by Cait Nishimura, accompanied by Dr. Sanghie Lee. She is pursuing a degree in music education.
“I am very grateful to have the opportunity to perform with all the other women in the music department, students and faculty,” Bruning said. “I’ve always looked up to them.”
The annual concert, now in its seventh year, was organized by Dr. Joanna Kim, associate department head and professor of music. The event celebrates the achievements and leadership of women in music while showcasing top student performers.
“The UNG International Women’s Day Celebration Concert highlights the artistic achievements and leadership of women in music within our community,” Kim said.
Bruning said her passion for the euphonium began in middle school and described the instrument as “powerful,” adding that performing alongside fellow musicians made the event especially meaningful.
Other featured student performers included soprano Elena Mejia, soprano Sofia Perez, pianist Melanie Prichici, clarinetist Piper Spraker and saxophonist Mariah Westmoreland. Each performer received departmental honors recognizing excellence in music performance, leadership or service.
The program also included performances by faculty members, continuing a tradition of mentorship and collaboration between students and instructors.
International Women’s Day, observed March 8, recognizes the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women worldwide.
The UNG Department of Music will host several upcoming concerts and guest performances through April at its Dahlonega and Gainesville campuses.
