CLEVELAND, Ga. — The City of Cleveland has promoted Finance Director John Solmon to deputy city manager, where he will continue overseeing the city’s finances while taking on additional administrative leadership responsibilities.
The appointment is effective immediately, according to a news release from City Manager Kevin Harris.
Solmon, who joined the city in 2023 as finance director, will retain that position while working alongside Harris to coordinate department operations, organizational initiatives and administrative functions across city government.
Mayor Josh Turner said Solmon has earned the confidence of city leaders through his service.
“John has proven himself to be a dedicated leader who is committed to serving the City of Cleveland,” Turner said. “He has earned the trust and confidence of the Mayor and Council, and I am confident he will excel as Deputy City Manager as we continue moving our community forward.”
Harris said the promotion reflects Solmon’s leadership and commitment to public service.
“John has established a reputation as a results-oriented leader and has earned the respect of his fellow colleagues and the community because of his work ethic, integrity, professionalism and commitment to public service,” Harris said. “I look forward to working alongside him as we continue improving City services and planning for Cleveland’s future.”
Solmon said he appreciates the opportunity to expand his role with the city.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the City of Cleveland in this new role and appreciate the confidence the Mayor, Council, and City Manager have placed in me,” Solmon said. “I look forward to working with our employees and serving our community every day.”
Before joining the city, Solmon worked in the private sector. He is a graduate of the University of North Georgia and is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Georgia.
In addition to his municipal duties, Solmon is serving his second term on the White County Board of Education. He and his wife, Jill, have two daughters.
City officials said Solmon’s expanded leadership role is expected to strengthen Cleveland’s management team and support the continued delivery of municipal services as the city grows.
