ATHENS, Ga. — A coordinated drug investigation in Athens-Clarke County ended with the arrest of an Athens man and the seizure of fentanyl, firearms, vehicles, and tens of thousands of dollars in cash, authorities said.
The Northeast Georgia Regional Drug Task Force announced it concluded an investigation on July 29 into what investigators described as a fentanyl distribution operation in Athens.
With assistance from the Athens-Clarke County Police Department’s Gang Unit, Traffic Unit, and K-9 Unit, investigators conducted traffic stops and executed search warrants at three locations connected to the investigation, including a storage unit, a hotel room, and a residence on Freeman Drive.
During the operation, authorities said they seized a trafficking quantity of fentanyl, four firearms, four vehicles allegedly used to facilitate the trafficking operation, and approximately $74,000 in cash.
Agents arrested 56-year-old Darren Turner of Athens and charged him with trafficking in fentanyl, possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute, and three counts of possession of a firearm by a restricted person/convicted felon.
The investigation remains ongoing.
